Polaris E-Mail

All U.S.-based UMUC faculty members and students may obtain a Polaris account for e-mail and publishing web pages. Your Polaris e-mail address is your polaris username plus @polaris.umuc.edu (e.g., msmith4@polaris.umuc.edu). If you have a Polaris e-mail account, you may use it to send e-mail only if you are using a computer on a UMUC site in Maryland and are connected to a UMUC LAN. Otherwise, if you name Polaris as your outgoing mail server, your mail will not be sent and you will receive an error message.

POP-3 and IMAP Accounts
A POP-3 (Post Office Protocol) account is a normal e-mail account provided by an Internet Service Provider; usually it does NOT allow you to keep your e-mail messages on the server.  In an IMAP (Internet Message or Mail Access Protocol) account, your e-mail messages and message folders may be left on the mail server and accessed from more than one computer.  UMUC's Polaris server is IMAP-capable, as are many business and organizational mail servers.

Request a Polaris Account

Students and Faculty
1. Go to http://www.umuc.edu/suppserv/it/hosts/itfaq.html
2. Click on How do I create a named student UNIX account?
3. Follow the instructions for newuser.

UMUC Staff
1. Go to the Intranet
2. Click on Departments from the top menu
3. Click Information Technology
4. Click in Services
5. Click User Accounts, then "Unix Account Request - Staff".
6. Fill out this form http://intranet.umuc.edu/forms/unix_req.shtml and
send it to Systems in ICC 0300

Log in to Polaris or Nova
It is not necessary to use an external mail program like Netscape Mail to read, send, and manage your Polaris e-mail. You can telnet to Polaris and use the Pine mail program in Polaris:

  1. Connect to the Internet via your ISP or LAN
  2. in Windows, select Start/Run
  3. type telnet polaris.umuc.edu in the dialog box
  4. Log in
  5. at the Polaris prompt, type pine.

Instructions on using the Pine UNIX mail program are in the Pine section of UMUC's online UNIX Guide.

Use Browser to Read Polaris and Nova E-mail
If you prefer to use a program other than Pine to read your Polaris mail, do one of the following:

  1. Name polaris.umuc.edu as one of the incoming mail servers within your e-mail program
  2. Set your Polaris e-mail to be automatically forwarded to your ISP or work e-mail account (the UMUC Computer Help Desk at 301-985-7400 can help you to do this).

Change Polaris and Nova Password
You will be prompted to reset your Polaris mail password every 3 months. You must access Polaris directly to change your Polaris password and to perform certain other functions, such as such as managing files when you exceed your Polaris space allotment.

  1. In Windows, select Start from the status bar, then select Run.
  2. In the Run window, type the following in the Open: text box:
telnet polaris.umuc.edu (for Nova, type telnet nova.umuc.edu)
  3. Select OK or press Enter
A telnet window will open that contains a security warning and a login prompt.  Log in to Polaris (or Nova) as usual.
  4. At the Polaris prompt, type passwd.
  5. At the prompt, Changing password, enter your old password.
  6. At the prompt New password, type a new password of your choice.*
  7. Re-enter your new password for verification.

*Your personal password must be between 6-8 characters, contain at least one non-alphabetic character and two alphabetic characters.  Alphabetic characters must be all lowercase, and the password cannot contain spaces.

Space Allotment
Make sure you don't exceed your e-mail space allotment on the Polaris and Nova servers, or your e-mail account will be suspended until you reduce your space used. That is, you cannot leave all your e-mail on the server indefinitely:  you must download messages you want to keep to your hard drive and then delete them from Polaris. (One large attachment in an e-mail can put a warning on your Polaris e-mail account and you will have to delete the e-mail message right away.)
