What is Java Virtual Machine? Java is a groundbreaking computing platform released by Sun Microsystems. Inc. in 1995. It enables just about any application -- including tools, information programs and services, and WebTycho's Text Formatting Editor (TFE), Spell Check, and Awareness -- to run on almost any computer.
Reminder at Log In If your computer does not have the correct JVM installed then each time you log in to WebTycho you will receive a pop-up reminder to install the correct version. You may choose to check a box in the message to not receive this message again, but you also will be unable to use the TFE until you make the recommended updates. If your computer has the proper Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s JVM installed then you will not receive this reminder.
Is There a Risk? The applets will have access to the local files system (hard disk) to read and write specifically for the function at hand. Chat Room is an example of an applet. The use of Java(TM) Applets has become widespread on the World Wide Web. An applet is a program written in the Java(TM) programming language that can be included in an HTML page, in much the same way an image is included. When you view a page that contains an applet, the applet's code is transferred to your system and executed by the browser.
Slow Loading Some users may find that using these features (TFE, Spell Check, and Classroom Awareness) is slower than expected and may result in temporary "freezing" of their computers. While these occurances are annoying they will not damage your computer or stop your classroom session. To avoid these delays, do not uninstall the JVM: instead simply disable TFE, Spell Check, or Awareness with Account Preferences.
