Classroom Awareness (People Here) View Faculty Instructions
Meet up with others in the classroom. Log in and check People Here to see who else is working in class right now. Click on any name in the list and begin an instant messaging dialogue. Participation is optional, but many people find this is a helpful way to engage in collegial collaboration.
Don't See People Here First, make sure you have it turned on (see below). If you have and it's still not showing, then your instructor has probably turned it off for everyone. Faculty may disable this feature for the whole class (see Class Menu) which will override your personal Account Preference setting in this class only.
Classroom Awareness Provides Three Things:
- How Many People Are Here? You can see how many people are in the class now and who also have enabled Awareness. There may be people working in the class who are not shown in the list because they have not enabled Class Awareness in their Account Preferences: you cannot see them and they cannot see you. If you wish to work unseen, simply disable Class Awareness in Account Preferences.
In the illustration below, two classmates (including yourself) are currently in this class.

- Who Are They? By double clicking on People Here, you can see who they are and they can see you too.

- Let's Chat. By double clicking a person's name you may initiate an instant messaging conversation. You may also invite other to join the same instant messaging discussion.

To Use Awareness
- Download and install Sun's JVM.
- Go to Options (in the toolbar at the top of your screen)
- Select Account Preferences
- Select the Enabled button next to Classroom Awareness
- When presented with the Java Security window you must click Grant to allow WebTycho to download a Java applet onto your computer.
- Once enabled you will see a link called People Here in the bottom left corner of the classroom with a number beside it, unless your instructor has disabled this feature class-wide.
